Portland’s Ukrainian Day festival celebrates spirit, resilience

The Ukrainian Community Choir performed a couple songs in the afternoon. The ensemble dressed in traditional vyshyvanka dresses and sang in Ukrainian. One vendor sold homemade Ukrainian dishes pastries. This year's festivities took place at Westmoreland Park in Southeast Portland on Saturday, August 22. Portland's annual Ukrainian Day was started by The Ukrainian Foundation in 2006. It honors the day Ukraine left the Soviet Union in 1991. This year's festival consisted of clothing vendors, children's activities, live performances, food and more. The festival consisted of several cultural performances including a choir and dance troupes. One station sold borsch, a soup commonly made with meat stock and vegetables, was available for sale alongside other traditional dishes such as pierogi. Saturday was a day for Portland’s Ukrainian community to celebrate, when crowds packed into Westmoreland Park for the sounds, spirit and flavor of home at the city’s annual Ukrainian Day festival.
