Portland Public Schools Superintendent Kimberlee Armstrong speaks at a groundbreaking event for Jefferson High School last spring. Armstrong has been facing scrutiny over her membership in a national organization that provides professional development and mentorship of education leaders, amid conversations about school closures in Oregon.

Two weeks ago, just hours before the Portland Public Schools board was first set to publicly discuss Superintendent Kimberlee Armstrong’s proposal to shutter up to 14 schools, an Instagram account from a coalition of dissident, anti-capitalist members of Oregon’s largest teachers’ union tossed a new grenade into the already fraught proceedings.
