Protesters gather outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building in South Portland to protest the possibility of National Guard troops being deployed in the city on Oct. 5, 2025.

President Trump has vowed to continue deploying National Guard troops to Democratic-led cities, calling the effort a necessity in response to “left-wing terrorism,” “lawlessness” and attacks on federal agents and immigration facilities.
