Description

Black Unity protesters marched in protest of a noose displayed in a Springfield neighborhood, only to find officers in SWAT gear blocking their path without warning, according to a judge's opinion. U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken in January rejected the city of Springfield's motion to dismiss the claims.

The city of Springfield has agreed to pay $700,000 to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by Black Unity protesters who alleged the police violated their free speech rights when officers put up barricades that redirected their July 2020 march in protest of a noose displayed in a neighborhood.
