Police believe a Happy Valley man, Edward Villa, shot and killed his girlfriend — along with her 15-year-old son and mother — earlier this week.

In a press conference Thursday, officials from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office released the names of the victims: Katie Kinder, her son Evan Kinder and her mother Patricia Campbell. Katie Kinder lived at her Happy Valley home with them, and her boyfriend Villa, who was an employee of the North Clackamas Schools District.

Evan Kinder was a 10th grade student at New Urban Online, the district confirmed Thursday.

In a written statement shared by law enforcement, the family of the victims described the homicides as a “heartbreaking tragedy.”

“Our family is living through a nightmare that no family should ever have to experience,” the family’s statement read. “These were not just three lives lost – they were our family, our loved ones and an irreplaceable part of our lives.”

Katie Kinder’s employer first notified police Monday that she had failed to show up for work. When she also did not arrive the next day, her coworkers went to her home and eventually called the police. There, police found the bodies of all the deceased victims, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Detective Matt Lysaght said.

Agents from the U.S. Marshals Service on Wednesday eventually located Villa at the South Jetty Inn in the coastal town of Hammond, a little more than two hours away by car. According to a press release from the agency, Villa killed himself before he could be taken into custody.

The events immediately leading up to the killings are still unclear. But Clackamas County Sheriff James Rhodes intimated the nature of the crimes.

“Domestic violence and violent crime has no place in Clackamas County,” Rhodes said.

In a statement, North Clackamas School District officials wrote that “students and families in every school district have the right to live free from fear, abuse, and violence, both within their home and throughout their community.”
