OSU release - PHILADELPHIA – Oregon State running back Anthony Hankerson and quarterback Maalik Murphy have been named to the Maxwell Award preseason watch list, it was announced Monday. The honor is given annually to college football's player of the year. The Beavers are one of 17 teams nationally with at least two selections to the preseason watch list, which numbers 80 players in total. Players do not have to be on the preseason watch list to be eligible for the award, which is now in its 89th year. Hankerson, from Boynton Beach, Fla., is in his second year at Oregon State after a dominant 2024 campaign. He ran for the 19th 1,000-yard season by a Beaver, totaling 1,082 with 15 scores. Those 15 rushing touchdowns ranked sixth for a single-season at Oregon State. Hankerson posted five games of 100 or more yards, and averaged 4.7 yards per rush. He also caught 27 passes for 151 yards. Murphy, from Inglewood, Calif., is in his first season at Oregon State. The signal caller transferred from Duke, where he threw for 2,933 yards and a program-record 26 touchdowns in 2024. He ranked 13th nationally for passing scores and 22nd for total yardage. Murphy surpassed 200 yards in 11 of 12 games and 300 twice. He also played two seasons for Texas, in 2022 and 2023, combining for 477 yards and three touchdowns in seven games, two of which were starts. Semifinalists for the honor will be announced Nov. 11 and three finalists selected two weeks later. The winner of the honor will be unveiled Dec. 11 at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
