Despite an overcast day, students were able to demonstrate their solar-powered boats thanks to powerful artificial lights. They were among 140 participants in the Renewable Energy Challenge at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.

NEWPORT — Since the power of the sun, wind and waves is virtually free and unlimited, how can we tap their energy to power our lives?
