ARLINGTON, Ore. – An investigation is underway after a crash on Interstate 84 fatally injured one driver and left an Oregon Department of Transportation worker in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, Gilliam County deputies said.According to the Gilliam County Sheriff’s Office, at about 2:39 p.m. on August 11 emergency dispatchers heard reports of a crash involving several vehicles and pedestrians on Interstate 84 about 14 miles west of Arlington.Deputies said they arrived to find an Oregon Department of Transportation employee had been stopped on the side of the road helping another driver with a tire change in a westbound lane. Deputies said the ODOT worker’s vehicle had been parked on the shoulder of the interstate with its warning lights activated and an active reader board displaying an arrow directing traffic to move into the other lane.GCSO officials said that while the ODOT worker was helping the driver, an approaching vehicle struck the ODOT vehicle, which then hit both the ODOT worker and the driver. Deputies said the ODOT worker was critically injured, and was taken by helicopter to a local trauma center where they remain in critical but stable condition. The driver passed away of their injuries at the scene.GCSO officials said traffic on the interstate was impacted for about five hours while emergency personnel responded and investigated the crash. Deputies said a suspect has been identified, and Oregon State Police are leading the investigation.
