Retired Lt. Col. David Gauntlett received the Bronze Star Medal with Valor during an Oregon National Guard ceremony at the Maj. Gen. George White Building in Salem, Ore., Oct. 19, 2026. The award recognizes his actions as a 20-year-old U.S. Air Force radio operator at Song Be, Vietnam, where he stayed at his radios through three days of mortar attacks in May 1969 despite a shrapnel wound. The original paperwork was lost after the war. Fifty-seven years later, an effort of more than five years by Gauntlett, fellow veterans, and the office of U.S. Rep. Val Hoyle brought the award to completion.
