Jessica Fichtel and son Kai Bonneau in their Vancouver home. Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, but declining vaccination rates have allowed it to gain ground again in Oregon and nationwide.

Kai Bonneau was rushed to the ER at Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland twice in a matter of weeks this year – first for a dangerous drug-resistant infection, then for a complication caused by antibiotics used to treat it.
