Self-checkouts are a common sight at supermarkets, but a new partnership will give Oregonians the chance to renew vehicle registrations on their own, too.

Oregon’s Driver and Motor Vehicle Services announced Thursday it is using kiosks in select Fred Meyer locations to give drivers a quick way to secure updated license plate tags.

The kiosks — owned and operated by Intellectual Technology Inc. — will initially only be available at nine Fred Meyer stores, but the DMV said in a statement it hopes to expand the offering soon.

“We see these kiosks as a way to improve customer service, access and equity,” DMV administrator Amy Joyce said in a statement.

With services available in English and Spanish, DMV officials said they wanted to improve customer experiences with their agency by making registration renewal easier. Some of the kiosks offer a cash payment option, and the tags provided will include the vehicle’s license plate number – something that’s not available with traditional registration renewal.

The initial kiosks will be at Fred Meyer stores in Beaverton, Bend, Eugene, Happy Valley, Hillsboro, Medford, Oak Grove, Salem and Tualatin. A map of the locations is available. The DMV said it hopes to open a kiosk in downtown Portland soon.

Last year, the Portland Bureau of Transportation reported an uptick in out-of-date vehicle registrations in the city coming out of the pandemic, according to KGW. Increasing the ways drivers can renew their plate tags may increase compliance with state law, though many vehicles will still need to visit an emissions testing site authorized by the state Department of Environmental Quality to fully register a vehicle.

Oregon did not spend tax dollars to purchase the kiosks, according to the DMV. Instead, each transaction carries a $4.95 fee that goes to Intellectual Technology.

DMV officials said they would like to expand the range of services available at the kiosks in the future as well. Intellectual Technology notes on its website that its kiosks have the capability to register voters, print duplicate licenses, renew drivers license or state ID cards, and print official driving records, among other capabilities.
