Measure to divert Portland climate funds to hire more police could be headed to voters in November

A Portland police-backed initiative to hire more officers using millions of dollars from the city’s climate action fund could be decided by voters in November.

The Enhanced Community Safety campaign announced yesterday that the group has collected more than 62,000 signatures.

That’s more than the 40,000 required to qualify for the November election. The campaign is led and supported by the Portland Police Association, a car dealership owner, and a former Portland City Council candidate.

The ballot proposal aims to use 25% of the Portland Clean Energy Fund’s annual revenue to hire 400 officers. That would divert roughly $50 million from climate programs to hire more officers and provide training. (Monica Samayoa and Troy Brynelson)

$3 jacket bought by Portland teen could net thousands at auction

A 19-year-old from Portland scored a piece of sports history while digging through bins at an area Goodwill.

A gold jacket with some loose stitching and light stains he purchased for about $3, turned out to be a warmup jacket worn by basketball great Wilt Chamberlain in the 1972-1973 NBA season. The jacket is now up for sale on Sotheby’s, an auction site for fine arts and collectables, where it is estimated to sell for between $150,000 and $250,000.
