Packwood died last week and he leaves a very messy legacy. IT'S TIME FOR THE 2026 SUMMER READING PROGRAM AT THE COOS BAY LIBRARY! Another school year has come and gone, which means it’s our favorite time of year at the library— the Summer Reading Program (SRP)! Our Youth Services Librarians have been hard at work for months lining up great performances, fun activities, and fabulous prizes to go with this year’s theme: Plant a Seed, Read! So, if you’re scratching your head over your summer schedule, read on for a sneak peek of some of the FREE entertainment we’re providing for this year’s festivities. Participants of this year’s SRP will earn Monopoly-style Coos Bay Public Library (CBPL) “Dollars” by reading and listening to books or completing activities. As players build their fictional fortune, they can decide to cash in their dollars or save up for a big-ticket prize. Smaller prizes include items such as pencils and erasers, while larger prizes like a summer reading T-shirt can be earned by completing reading and activity goals over time. This is a great way for kids to learn how to manage their “money” and plan ahead to save enough for their favorite prizes. This year’s SRP will officially kick off with an all-ages Block Party from 4:00pm – 6:00pm on Thursday, June 18. Join us in the library’s back parking lot for an evening of FREE food, games, crafts, books, and fun! Bring the whole family (or just yourself) to this event for a chance to interact with community partners and learn about the opportunities and programs on offer in your area. Enjoy a start to summer fun and pick up a SRP game piece to start earning your CPBL dollars! Earlier that week on Tuesday, June 16, the Rainbow Dance Theater from Western Oregon University is bringing Code Can Dance to CBPL for two youth workshops and an evening performance open to the public. This unforgettable experience combines coding, dance, music, animation, and technology to create a showpiece using programmable LED costumes that light up and respond dynamically to movement. Using the Avatar Coder app, participants will create an animated dance sequence, visual effects, and interactive scenes while learning real computer science concepts such as sequencing, loops, variables, events, and problem solving. Students don’t just learn coding—they perform it! Young people in grades 3-6 are invited to sign up for the 2:30pm – 3:20pm class, while those in grades 7-12 are encouraged to sign up for a more advanced class from 3:30pm–4:20pm. At 6:30pm everyone is invited back to the library to watch the Rainbow Dance Theater and students perform using this amazing technology. At CBPL we love to clown around, and we’re thrilled to invite kids of all ages to join us for Mz. Pearl’s Circus Palooza traveling show from 2:00pm–3:00pm on Tuesday, June 30. This performance combines physical comedy, juggling, magic, and audience participation into a hilarious and surprising adventure the whole family will love. Co-starring a host of rubber chickens handled by audience volunteers, Mz. Pearl will entertain her audience with tango dancing, fish charades, and astounding circus tricks. Ocean lovers are invited to two kid-focused events featuring the University of Oregon’s Charleston Marine Life Center. On Wednesday, June 17 at 10:00am Miss Jennifer will be holding an ocean-themed Storytime at the Charleston Marine Life Center for kids aged 0-5 and their caregivers, with the opportunity to explore the center’s tidepool animal habitat after the storytime. On Thursday, July 9 at 10:00am kids aged 4-12 and their families are invited to the Myrtlewood Room to enjoy a special visit from the Charleston Marine Life Center’s Hunter Conn. Hunter will introduce you to our boneless marine neighbors up close at this special, hands-on program for kids. See and learn about animals like sea urchins, mussels, barnacles, hermit crabs, worms, sponges, and sea stars that inhabit our local tidepools. Want to experience the joy, creativity, and magic of movement with your family? We invite you to the Mingus Park Amphitheater on Friday, July 10 at 10:00am for an interactive hula hoop program with Hillia Hula! This exciting hands-on program features books, music, and, of course, hula hoops! Bring the whole family to engage with the performance, play, and get active at the park. One of the most hard-working animals on the planet, bees, will get their moment in the spotlight in a special presentation by the University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History on Wednesday, July 15 from 10:00am – 11:00am. Insect enthusiasts of all ages are invited to enjoy an hour of hands-on science fun with buzzworthy activities exploring the wonderful world of Oregon Bees. Learn about the over 500 species of bees we have in Oregon, including mason bees, cuckoo bees, mining bees, bumblebees, and the universally beloved honeybee! Animal lovers of all ages are invited back the following week for a visit from the Creature Teachers on Tuesday, July 21 from 2:00pm – 3:00pm. This fan-favorite traveling show will feature 7-10 live animals to meet and learn about, with close-up encounters possible after the show. Animals may include snakes, turtles, and iguanas. Space for this program is limited to the first 100 people, so drop in early to secure your seat. Another fan favorite you may remember from past SRPs will be joining us at Mingus Park on Sunday, July 26 from 2:00pm – 2:45pm: Takohachi, Portland’s famed Japanese drum and dance ensemble! Learn about Japanese culture through music and dance at a family friendly event featuring taiko drums, the three-stringed Tsugaru shamisen, the Shinobue bamboo flute and more. This performance is being made possible by a generous grant from the Pacific Power Foundation. Bring a blanket and a snack to the Mingus Park Amphitheater and settle in for an exciting cultural experience. Tweens and Teens are invited to solve a retro murder mystery on Thursday, July 30 from 5:30pm – 7:00pm in Murder at the Roller Rink. Picture it: 1988. The Podunk Roller Rink. Teens glide across the dance floor showing off their shoulder pads and mullets when the sound of a scream brings the skaters to a screeching halt. Upon investigating, our skaters find the body of Kevin Floosey, the new kid in town, strangled to death with a leg warmer. If you think you have what it takes to find the killer (and are from ages 12-18), don your hottest 80’s fashion and join us for an evening of pizza and intrigue. Miss Jennifer’s cooked up some very special story times this summer, including several pajama story times (June 22, July 27, & August 13). Kids ages 0-8 are invited to wear their coziest pajamas and bring along their favorite stuffy to enjoy stories, rhymes, and songs from 5:30pm – 6:30pm at the library! For those looking for adventure, join us for a storytime at the Charleston Marine Life Center on June 17 at 10:00am for kids age 0-5. This special “on location” storytime will feature ocean-themed stories, rhymes, and songs with the option to explore the Marine Life Center afterwards and see tidepool animals.
