Nike’s name and famous Swoosh are at the heart of a religious ruling in Libya. An influential Islamic authority says the name’s connection to the ancient Greek goddess of victory makes wearing the branding religiously impermissible.

One of the world’s most famous sports brands is facing an unusual religious ruling in Libya because of a connection that goes back thousands of years. Dar al-Ifta, an influential Islamic authority based in Tripoli, issued a fatwa telling Muslims not to buy, sell or wear Nike products, according to BBC reporting published by Yahoo News and a Nov. 5 story in The Washington Post.
