Description

A memorial service is planned for Friday in Charlotte for former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, his family and others who were killed in a plane crash last month.

The service, which is open to the public and will be livestreamed on NASCAR platforms, was scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EST at Bojangles Coliseum.

FILE - Greg Biffle celebrates in victory lane after winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, in Kansas City, Kan.

Biffle was among seven killed along with his wife, Cristina, and children Ryder, 5, and Emma, 14, when the plane crashed as it returned to the airport in Statesville, North Carolina, according to authorities. Others on the plane were identified as Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the NTSB.

The 55-year-old Biffle was selected by NASCAR as one of its top 75 drivers in history, was a Hall of Fame nominee for the stock car series and drove for 18 years at the top of the sport. He drew headlines last year with tireless humanitarian efforts as a helicopter pilot supplying aid in the devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene.

The Cessna C550 erupted in flames when it hit the ground shortly after it had departed Statesville Regional Airport, about an hour’s drive north of Charlotte. The plane crashed while trying to return and land, authorities said.

In a letter written by Nicole Biffle that she was too grief-stricken to read herself at her daughter’s service, she agonized over her decision to allow Emma to fly that day knowing Emma wasn’t feeling well. She had purchased tickets to Italy as a present for her daughter the night before the crash.

The crash a week before Christmas left the NASCAR community shaken and was another blow in a long offseason. Ten days later, on the 52nd wedding anniversary of Denny Hamlin’s parents, the house the future Hall of Famer built to repay them for their years of sacrifice burned down. His father, Dennis, was killed, and Mary Lou Hamlin was rushed to a hospital burn unit.

Sheriff’s deputies are also investigating an alleged break-in and theft last week at Biffle’s home in Mooresville that netted $30,000 in cash, some guns and memorabilia.

MAYOR'S MESSAGE

Setting the Stage for 2026 Through Community, Collaboration, and Growth

This week we had several opportunities to engage with the community. Last Saturday, Oregon Bay Area Beautification held their first cleanup of 2026 at Millicoma Marsh Trail. The turnout was great, as usual, but likely boosted by both the beautiful weather and the community’s love of this wonderful amenity. Many thanks to the OBAB team and their many supporters, and as always, a special shout out to Jamie Fereday, the champion of Millicoma Marsh Trail.

Tuesday, at the first 2026 session of Leadership Coos, Councilor Cribbins shared presentation honors with North Bend’s Mayor Engelke, to speak on the topic of “How We are Governed”. This large class of Leadership Coos attendees learned about both city’s structure and some processes, with a deep dive into urban renewal and the property tax system. My thanks to Councilor Cribbins for representing Coos Bay, in familiar territory – Coos Bay City Hall Council Chambers!

On Wednesday, at the first Wednesday Business Connection luncheon of 2026, Councilor Kilmer and Councilor Matthews presented to a large audience the “State of the City” address. The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce hosts these weekly luncheons at the Ko-Kwel Casino and Resort, and the annual State of the City luncheon is always well attended. The Coos Bay City Councilors spoke about economic development and urban renewal, both significant drivers for the Coos Bay of tomorrow which we are all working on with thoughtful planning and through collaborative partnerships.

We will close out the week by attending the Friday evening “Pitch Night” at NoBe Taphouse in North Bend. This is an annual event of the South Coast Development Council / Southwest Oregon Innovation Hub and will showcase five entrepreneurs, pitching their business idea. This community-wide event brings together many organizations who support it, volunteer at the event with coaching or judging, and most importantly give the lucky winner a boost towards business success.

This early week of 2026 sets the stage for what this year has to offer – opportunities to listen and learn, volunteer, collaborate with great partners, and most importantly engage in all that we have available in our community. Here is to a great start to 2026!
