Description

Stephen Murphy died in 2022 after losing consciousness in his Multnomah County Detention Center jail cell.

A newly hired Multnomah County deputy was working in the downtown Portland jail by herself for the first time when an inmate she had failed to check on fell unconscious, later dying with severe internal bleeding and with fentanyl in his blood, records show. The deputy falsely marked in the jail logbook that she had checked the cell, but detectives concluded her “conduct did not rise to the level of a crime.”
