More than 800 people came in out of the rain to enjoy a hot meal for free at the Portland Art Museum on Christmas Day. Some brought their pets and left with a meal to go and extra hats and socks.Rodney Harris, 59, posed for a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus, as did his dog Lovey, a pit bull mix. He then left with an extra packaged meal, a bag of turkey strips for his dog and his photo.  “At least for a little while,” he said, “you feel like you’re not out there by yourself.”“It’s beautiful,” said Chris Giordani, 47, his cheeks still red from the cold as he sat down with a plate full of turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes and string beans. He said he felt a bit of the spirit of the holiday, seeing “so many people in the community out in the same place,” as a pianist played “Frosty the Snowman.”Many people left with a packaged meal and were offered a bag of pet food to take with them.Volunteer Amelia Tompkins, 31, in gray T-shirt, looked for plates to clear. Tompkins moved to Portland from England four days ago and looked for a way to volunteer on Christmas. She chose to move to Portland,Rosina Strebig, 51, pictured above with walker, has been homeless for five years. After eating, she stopped to talk with the organizer before heading back outdoors. “Thank you,” Strebig told David Utzinger. “Every year, we try to come, and I appreciate it.”Visitors were offered a loaf of bread to take with them after the meal.Volunteers offered visitors holiday cards to take and share with family or friends.More than 800 people came in out of the rain to enjoy a hot meal for free at the Portland Art Museum on Christmas Day. Some brought their pets and left with a meal to go and extra hats and socks.Pete Young Buffalo, with multi-colored coat at end of table, lives in The Henry building in downtown Portland, and was among those who came for the warm holiday meal.The gift tent on the Southwest Park blocks across from the Portland Art Museum.Teresa Kedor, of Portland, crocheted more than 190 hats that she donated for the event. She helped hand them out Wednesday afternoon in the gift tent. “It’s my hobby.
