Description
Oregonians are taking to the streets once again this weekend to take part in multiple anti-immigration enforcement protests across Portland.
It comes after a man and a woman were shot and injured Thursday by Border Patrol in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood. The people who were shot were later identified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as Venezuelan nationals Luis David Nino-Moncada and Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras.
As of Friday afternoon, the pair was in stable condition. Homeland Security said the shooting occurred during a targeted traffic stop.
It follows another shooting this week by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer that killed a 37-year-old woman, Renee Good, in Minneapolis.

The shootings have already sparked protests in Portland this week with hundreds of people rallying against ICE. Several organizations and advocacy groups are hosting vigils and protests this weekend in response to federal law enforcement’s operations and calling for them to leave the city.
The Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC), is among several groups co-hosting a vigil Saturday afternoon at Terry Schrunk Plaza in downtown Portland. In a social media post, the organization says it’s holding the vigil to allow people a safe space to mourn and express themselves amid the recent shootings.
Portland Contra las Deportaciones (PDXCD), an immigrant rights organization, is also co-hosting a rally outside Legacy Emanuel Hospital Saturday in North Portland.
Organizers with PDXCD say the hospital is the go-to location for agents to bring detainees injured during their arrests. The group says they’re demanding the hospital end their collaboration with ICE, according to a press release.
Last month, the Oregon Nurses Association sent a letter to Legacy Emanuel raising concerns about the hospital’s approach to treat patients in custody. The union accused the hospital of letting ICE dictate patient care. Legacy has denied those claims.
On Thursday, state and local officials at a press conference in Portland urged people who plan to participate in protests over the coming days do so peacefully. Portland Police Chief Bob Day echoed that message Friday encouraging protesters to remain calm, peaceful and nonviolent this weekend.
An “ICE Out For Good” protest is also being held Saturday near Waterfront Park in downtown Portland.
