Description
This is a developing story and will be updated.
More details are emerging about a deadly shooting Thursday that left three children and a teacher dead at Bend’s Silver Rail Elementary School, and about the man who stopped it.
Rhoam Summer, a playful 5-year-old who attended kindergarten at the school, is among the dead, his grandfather told OPB on Friday.
Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two other students at the school, is the bystander who followed an armed 16-year-old into Silver Rail and shot the teen before he could kill anybody else, according to the Associated Press.
Officials have not yet named the teacher or the other children, ages 8 and 11, who died. They also have released few details about the 16-year boy they say killed them and injured two others with a shotgun before Giamanco shot the teen. Bend police say they’ll share further updates at 2 p.m. Friday.
But Brad Jolly of Bend confirmed that his grandson, who he described as a bright, playful “lovely little kid,” was among those killed.
“He had a scooter he would run up and down the hallway of our house,” Jolly told OPB. “We talked about many things. Read books together. He always gave me a big hug when he left.”
As people in Bend mourn Rhoam and the others killed on Thursday, people in the community have also been quick to praise Giamanco for preventing further tragedy.

Giamanco’s mother, Kenda Freeman, confirmed his role, the Associated Press reported Friday.
“He is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel and community for the outpouring of love and support,” Freeman said, reading from a prepared statement to reporters outside her son’s residence near the school.
Freeman declined to speak with OPB on Friday morning. She told reporters the family is not granting interviews.
The deadly shooting at Silver Rail unfolded in mere moments. The first call to Deschutes County dispatchers came in at 12:59 p.m. from someone in a vehicle outside Silver Rail Elementary School who said somebody was shooting at them. Less than five minutes later, police were on the scene and the suspected shooter was already dead, Police Chief Mike Krantz said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

Specifics about the shooter’s motivations and relationship to the school are still unclear, leaving grieving residents with more questions than answers.
On Friday, law enforcement sources confirmed to OPB that the teen suspect in the shooting was using a shotgun. According to the Associated Press, the weapon was a pump-action shotgun that was bought by the suspect’s mother. OPB has not been able to independently verify that detail.
