2025...A YEAR OF POSSIBILITIES As we step into a fresh chapter with the start of 2025, I am filled with hope, pride, and optimism for our community. Over the past year, we’ve celebrated milestones like Coos Bay’s 150th birthday, honored our heritage, and taken bold steps toward building a brighter future. Without the help of the many organizations and individuals in Coos Bay, this work would not be possible. Recently, we shared an update to the Council Goals and acknowledged the many organizations that the City partners with. As is often the case, the possibility of missing an acknowledgement always exists and regrettably two such organizations were not included: Coos Bay School District (CBSD) and Community Coalition of Empire (CCE). CCE has been a significant driver of several opportunities in Empire, partnering with the City on the Empire mural and adding an informed voice to the development of the Empire Blueprint are examples of just two projects. CBSD is currently partnering with the City on a Safe Routes to School project, similar to an effort that was undertaken several years ago in the Eastside area. Additionally, CBSD and the City will be holding some community meetings at schools in Empire, Eastside, and downtown. The intent of these meetings is to share information related to emergency response and preparedness, following the December 5, 2024, Tsunami warning and evacuation. Stay tuned for more information on these meetings including dates and times. This year, we will continue to invest in what makes Coos Bay special: our people, our natural beauty, and our thriving local economy. From revitalizing downtown to expanding opportunities for local businesses and creating spaces where families can connect and thrive, we are committed to making Coos Bay a place we’re all proud to call home. We know challenges may arise, but Coos Bay has always faced them with strength and ingenuity. As we move forward, let’s remember the power of unity, compassion, and the small acts of kindness that make our city shine. I want to thank each and every one of you—our residents, community leaders, and volunteers—who make Coos Bay extraordinary. Your hard work and dedication inspire me every day, and I am honored to serve as your Mayor. Here’s to a year of opportunity, growth, and connection. Together, let’s make 2025 one of best yet. -Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay
