OR. Dept. of Forestry release - SALEM, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Forestry wants to remind timber operators that their state-registered log brands must be renewed between Oct. 19 and Dec. 31, 2026. Log brands discourage log theft - Log brands − The identifying symbols welded onto the face of a hammer and struck into the ends of logs for identification − discourage log theft and aid in the return of lost logs. When transported on public highways, waterways, or railroads west of the crest of Oregon's Cascade Mountain range, forest products and booming equipment must have a log brand that has been registered with ODF. Under Oregon law, log brand registrations must be renewed every five years. Renewal forms will automatically be mailed to registered log brand owners on Oct. 19, 2026. Timber operators whose addresses have changed since their initial registration or last renewal need to provide ODF with their current address before Oct. 19 to ensure they receive their renewal certificate. Address information can be sent to the ODF’s Log Brands Unit by phone or email: Phone: 503-931-5515. Email: [email protected]. Operators who registered in 2026 must still renew their brands for the new five-year period (Jan. 1, 2027 – Dec. 31, 2031). The new log brands will be active through Dec. 31, 2031. Any log brands not renewed by Dec. 31, 2026, will be considered abandoned and the registration number will expire.
