Politics reporter Carlos Fuentes covered the Oregon Legislature’s short session earlier this month. “Politics is often more nuanced and requires so much more context than you get out of headlines or a quick social media post,” he said. “Being there every day gives you so much more insight into what is being decided and why.”

I sometimes hear from readers who can’t access one of our stories because they haven’t subscribed. They’ll argue that because the topic is important to Oregonians, it should be “free.”
