Social Security recipients will learn in October how much their checks will go up next year. (Getty Images)

Since 1975, the Social Security Administration has implemented a yearly Cost of Living Adjustment. The benefit bump – except for 2009, 2010 and 2015 when the COLA was zero – helps prevent inflation from further eroding benefits for 75 million Social Security recipients.
