June 19, 2026 has been proclaimed Juneteenth in Tualatin, recognizing the significance of freedom, the contributions of African Americans, and our communityโ€™s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. For more than 150 years, Juneteenth has been celebrated by the Black American community as a day of remembrance, resilience, and freedom. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery while recognizing the sacrifices made in the ongoing pursuit of civil rights, equality, and opportunity. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the many contributions African Americans have made to our nation and communities. The City of Tualatin values and welcomes diversity and believes that the rich variety of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives within our community is one of our greatest strengths. This proclamation was introduced and adopted at the May 26, 2026 City Council Meeting. We encourage our community to join us in recognizing Juneteenth, honoring the history and significance of this day, celebrating our diverse community, and continuing to build a culture of inclusivity, respect, and acceptance for all.
