Community-made clay pieces reflect personal connections to ancestry and tradition. Some may be cast in bronze for a future memorial.Artists Qi You and Sophia Xiao-fan Austrins guide community members through the clay-making process. Their final memorial design will incorporate selected pieces from the workshop.Participant shape modeling clay into offerings during a workshop led by artists Qi You and Sophia Xiao-fan Austrins in Portland’s Old Town.Many food items were sculpted as offerings during previous clay workshops.Clay offerings — including dumplings, fruits and cups — are displayed inside the Oregon Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association’s main room during a community workshop to design a memorial at Lone Fir Cemetery.Participants sculpt a small spiral animal as an offering.Around 20 community members gathered in Old Town Portland to contribute sculpted offerings for a cultural heritage memorial at Lone Fir Cemetery.Previous clay items on display included Chinese coins and other small mementos.An pile of fruits made from clay at the Saturday workshop.Clay versions of art supplies made during the community workshop.

At the center of the Oregon Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association main room in Old Town, a collection of objects was carefully arranged on the floor. Encircled by a rope laid down on ground, the clay items were accompanied by physical mementos, including picture frames, vases and cups, to inspire participants in the Saturday morning clay workshop.
