This holiday season, the Portland International Airport could see almost a million travelers pass through its doors, according to an airport spokesperson. Among the thousands of staff that work to make holiday travel possible is a little-known cohort of four-legged helpers.
Year-round, more than 20 service dogs and their handlers volunteer to walk the halls of the airport with the goal of alleviating stress for both passengers and employees.
“Our goal is to brighten their days,” said Kathy Loter, Program Director for Dove Lewis Canine Therapy Teams. “We spend a lot of time with TSA, flight crews and port staff, so it’s not just the travelers that we visit out here.”
On Dec. 23, 14 dogs were joined by two service llamas, which have become a fixture of the December holiday markets at the airport. Travelers and airport staff lined up to get selfies with Panda and Beni — two 300-pound llamas dressed in holiday attire.
“My favorite response is when we are walking down to a concourse, and you have people with their blank stares just trying to make their way to luggage claim, and they turn around the corner and see a llama and their body just melts in excitement,” said Shannon Joy, who runs the nonprofit Mtn. Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas with her mother, Lori Gregory.

Joy, who was sporting shiny llama earrings, said that the animals they bring out for these events are hand-selected for their social personalities, and they enjoy the attention. Beni, 17 and Panda, 10, each have roughly a decade of experience serving as therapy animals in the community.
“You can’t force a llama to do something they don’t want to do. They are very proud, stubborn animals. They are 300 pounds of awesome, so if they don’t want to be here they will let you know,” Joy said.
Each llama and dog has a trading card with their name and details about their personality. Visitors are encouraged to collect the cards as they meet each animal.
While the llamas can only be seen at the airport over the holidays, service dogs are year-round visitors there. Since their handlers are volunteers, there are no set hours, but they can be seen at the airport about five days per week. The teams dress up and gather for special holidays like Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Halloween.
Many of the dogs in Portland Area Canine Therapy Teams are fostered after moving on from previous service dog positions. Over 100 handlers and their pups volunteer in hospitals, shelters and in the court system — among other places.
Handler Kathy Wentworth fostered service dog Lisa Lu 6 years ago. The now-7-year-old pup changed careers from working as a service dog for the blind.
“I love seeing people’s faces light up when they see the dogs. The dogs love seeing the people, they love seeing the other dogs, and they just love making people happy,” Wentworth said.
