When former Sheriff Angela Brandenburg abruptly announced her retirement in July, Roberts asked the county’s top attorney, Billy Williams, whether he could also serve as sheriff on an interim basis, according to the sources, who each spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive conversations.

Clackamas County Chair Craig Roberts, a former sheriff, recently asked the county lawyer whether he could simultaneously hold both powerful positions, according to two sources who were told about the inquiry.
