Description

Scenes from Oregon 22 in early August 2021 as crews worked to cut fire-damaged trees along the highway after historic wildfires in September 2020 devastated many of the small Santiam Canyon communities east of Salem. Wildfire survivors were not required to pay federal income taxes on damages they were awarded under the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act, but the exemption is now coming to an end.

At the end of 2024, wildfire survivors who had waited years to be paid in settlements over powerline-ignited fires got major relief from the federal government: they would not have to pay federal income taxes on the damages they were awarded.
