Hwy. 30 Fatal, Clatsop Co.

CLATSOP COUNTY, Ore. (14 September 2026) - On Saturday, September 12, 2026, at approximately 8:56 p.m., Oregon State police responded to a four-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 30 near milepost 85 in Clatsop County. The preliminary investigation indicated a black Ford Ranger pickup, operated by Markham Marshall Stangland (65) of Warrenton, was traveling westbound on Highway 30 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed into the eastbound lane of travel and sideswiped a black Ram 1500 pickup, operated by Jaden Vinay Govindan (25) of Aloha. The Ford Ranger continued westbound in the eastbound lane and struck an eastbound Ford Transit van, operated by Haiden Cunningham (21) of Milwaukie. An eastbound green Ford F-100 pickup, operated by Gregory Louis Wavra (29) of Longview, Washington, was unable to stop and struck the Ford Ranger and Ford Transit van. The Ford Transit van was occupied by 11 Oregon National Guard members returning to the Clackamas area from a training event at Camp Rilea near Warrenton. The operator of the Ford Ranger (Stangland) was pronounced deceased at the scene. Stangland is not believed to have been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The operator of the Ram 1500 (Govindan) sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The operator of the Ford Transit van (Cunningham) sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The operator of the Ford F-100 (Wavra) sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The highway was impacted for approximately four hours during the on-scene investigation. There were 17 occupants among the four vehicles, which triggered a mass casualty event response from neighboring fire departments, police departments, and area hospitals. OSP was assisted by the Clatskanie Fire Department, Knappa Fire Department, Astoria Fire Department, Medix Ambulance Service, Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, Astoria Police Department, Oregon Department of Transportation, and the Washington State Patrol. OSP would like to sincerely thank each of these agencies for their prompt response and assistance during this large-scale emergency.

Hwy. 101 Fatal, Clatsop Co.

CLATSOP COUNTY, Ore. (14 September 2026) - On Saturday, September 12, 2026, at approximately 9:09 a.m., Oregon State Police responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 101 near milepost 26 in Clatsop County. The preliminary investigation indicated a light blue Ford Explorer, operated by Ronald Gregory Smith (76) of Tillamook, was traveling northbound on Highway 101 when it used the right shoulder to pass a northbound black Toyota Highlander, operated by Ronald Francis Smith (84) of Seaside. The Ford Explorer sideswiped the Toyota Highlander before reentering the northbound lane. The Ford Explorer then crossed the southbound lane and traveled onto the shoulder, where it struck an embankment and several trees. The operator of the Ford (Ronald Gregory Smith) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The operator of the Highlander (Ronald Francis Smith) was not injured. A passenger in the Ford, Marie Schmitt (56) of Tillamook, sustained serious injuries and was flown to a Portland-area hospital. Based on the investigation and witness statements, the operator of the Ford (Ronald Gregory Smith) may have suffered a medical emergency immediately before the crash. The highway was impacted for approximately five hours during the on-scene investigation. OSP was assisted by the Cannon Beach Fire Department, Medix Ambulance Services, Cannon Beach Police Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Hwy. 35 Fatal, Hood River, Co.

HOOD RIVER COUNTY, Ore. (14 September 2026) - On Sunday, September 13, 2026, at approximately 2:36 a.m., Oregon State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 35 near milepost 100 in Hood River County. The preliminary investigation indicated a silver Subaru Outback, operated by Omar Julio Solano-Delgado (33) of Hood River, was traveling southbound on Highway 35 when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle collided with and went through the guardrail before traveling down a steep embankment. The operator of the Subaru (Solano-Delgado) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The highway was impacted for approximately one hour during the on-scene investigation. Impairment is being investigated as a contributing factor in the crash. OSP was assisted by the Hood River Fire & EMS, WyEast Fire District, Hood River Sheriff’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Hwy. 199 Fatal, Josephine Co.

JOSEPHINE COUNTY, Ore. (14 September 2026) – On Friday, September 11, 2026, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Oregon State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 199 near milepost 20 in Josephine County. The preliminary investigation indicated a white Ram 3500 pickup, operated by Harvey Anthony Caron (72) of Cave Junction, was traveling southbound on Highway 199 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed the center median and northbound lane before striking several trees on the shoulder of the highway. The operator of the Ram (Caron) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The highway was not impacted during the investigation. OSP was assisted by the Illinois Valley Fire District, Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
