A 33-year old male was sentenced to more than 20-years in prison last week in a Coos County Circuit Court at Coquille for the April crash on Hwy. 42 that killed the Umpqua Community College softball coach and one of the team’s players. UCC was returning to Roseburg April 18th following a doubleheader at Coos Bay against SWOCC. Jonathan Dowdy was driving a westbound truck southeast of Myrtle Point when he crossed the centerline hitting the team’s van head-on. The van rolled killing one player and injuring eight others with moderate to severe injuries. Dowdy pled guilty during court proceedings in August to two-counts of Second-Degree Manslaughter, three-counts of Third-Degree Assault, five-counts of Fourth Degree Assault, Driving with a Suspended License, and DUII. Judge Andrew E. Combs sentenced Dowdy.
