Description

Police identified Curtis Leroy Palmer, 60, as the driver of the silver Ford Escape (pictured) that hit two pedestrians and several cars during the incident, which sprawled across several city blocks.

The man who drove the car that careened down Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard last Thursday — hitting pedestrians and other cars as it swerved over sidewalks and through traffic — died on Tuesday from injuries he sustained in the crashes, officials said.

A lot of residents were out enjoying the water and woods to escape the heat on Saturday, and more than a few needed some extra assistance from the Sheriff’s Office. Please follow these tips to stay safe when you explore the outdoors in our county: ⛰️ Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return. 🌨️ Know conditions before you leave - rain in the valley can mean ice up high! 🏕️ Be prepared to stay out overnight - even if you don't plan to get out of your car (or boat). 🗺️ Bring maps for offline navigation - cell service can be spotty! 🌊 If you go on the water, ALWAYS wear a life jacket! On August 9th at 5 a.m., Lane County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue volunteers responded to a assist a stranded driver on Gowdyville Road. The driver was able to contact a tow company to assist retrieving the vehicle. An hour later, patrol deputies responded to a missing person at Harvest Landing. A woman had wandered into the woods and became lost. Several Search & Rescue volunteers responded as deputies searched the area. She was found about an hour later and guided back to her vehicle. At about 7 p.m., Marine Patrol deputies assisted Eugene Springfield Fire with a search of the Willamette River below Owosso Bridge for a missing juvenile. ESF located the subject, who was transported to an area hospital. While not Search & Rescue related, at about 9 p.m. that evening, a deputy patrolling Glenwood noticed a male on the side of Franklin Boulevard who was not breathing. The deputy called for medics and administered Narcan. The male began breathing again, and was transported to an area hospital by medics. Several area fire departments, including Eugene Springfield Fire, made multiple water rescues over the day as well. Please be safe out there!
