Description
Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, 8:00 PM - CFPA release - SW Oregon – Firefighters from Coos Forest Protective Association (CFPA) are actively engaged in suppression efforts on the Doerner Fir tree fire. The historic tree, which is located east of Coquille on BLM land, was displaying active flames at the top and burning down a portion of the trunk. Multiple engines and a hand crew are on scene as well as overhead from BLM to help coordinate suppression efforts with CFPA. Helicopter bucket drops have been used throughout the day to cool the active fire near the top of the tree. Utilizing existing trail systems, firefighters have constructed hand line for containment around the entire perimeter near the base of the tree to prevent further spread. Sprinklers are in place at the base of the tree to slow fire activity, but firefighters are unable to work directly under the tree due to the risk of fallout from the burning treetop. A BLM drone was brought in to capture imagery near the top of the tree which will help firefighters determine a suppression strategy to preserve the historic tree. Investigators from the Bureau of Land Management are working to determine the cause of the fire. Visitors should be aware that the area will be closed to public use at this time due to active fire and firefighting efforts. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
