Description
Southern Oregon Coast
Will we see YOU at the tidepools?
The lowest tides on the coast are coming back June 14-17, July 13-15 and August 11-12!
Tips for Respectful Tidepooling:
♻️ Grab a disposable bag before you head out to pick up trash while you're on the beach!
🌊 Be very aware of sneaker waves and never turn your back on the ocean. Sneaker waves can and will still happen, even if the tide is out!
🥾 Watch your step! Avoid walking directly on slippery algae-covered rocks, kelp, and of course, rocks covered in animals like barnacles and mussels.
⭐️ You can gently pet, but do not pry fragile marine organisms from the rocks! Low tide is already a stressful time for intertidal critters, and pulling sensitive animals like sea stars off rocks causes unnecessary harm.
In Port Orford, the rocks around Battle Rock Wayside Park expose beautiful tide pools during minus tides: featuring seaweeds, ochre sea stars, hermit crabs, anemones, urchins, and gumboot chitons (otherwise known as wandering meatloaf)! Keep your eyes peeled for seabirds as well, such as black oystercatchers and brown pelicans.
Plan accordingly and #discoverportorford during low tide for a chance to visit some of our marine locals!
