Coos FPA - Devils Staircase Fire, 2 miles north of Scottsburg, OR ; During this morning’s aerial reconnaissance flights, a lightning-caused wildfire was detected in the Devil’s Staircase Wilderness. CFPA crews responded quickly with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). Air resources were able to knock down the fire while ground crews worked to make access through rugged terrain. The fire was contained at 0.21 acres and has since been turned over to the Siuslaw National Forest for continued monitoring and management. Update: The fire is contained as of 6:00 PM on 9/7/25. Crews are currently on scene of a half-acre fire in the Devils Staircase Wilderness. The full suppression response includes engines, air support and firefighters from the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Oregon Department of Forestry, and the Coos Forest Protective Association. Smoke may be visible from Highway 38 or the surrounding area. The cause of this fire is lightning. Despite cooler weather over the last few days, the potential for fire in the Oregon Coast Range continues. Please prevent human-caused wildfires.
