Officer Rachel McDonald, a member of the Portland Police Bureau’s Behavioral Health Unit, works on a built-in laptop inside a police SUV. The unit pairs officers with mental health clinicians to respond to crisis calls and connect people with support services.

Over the course of two days spent with Portland Police Officer Rachel McDonald and social worker Sarah Scafani, The Oregonian/OregonLive watched the pair find and help Portlanders that most people were busy leaving well enough alone.
