Dear Readers: Many of you wrote to me in response to “Independent and Irritated.” This 65-year-old single woman was struggling with how to reply to people who questioned why she never married despite her older age. So many readers wrote in to share their own similar experiences and suggest some wonderful replies to an invasive and awkward question. Here are some of my favorites I wanted to share with you.

**Local Scam Alert** Our office has received multiple calls from community members reporting scammers pretending to be with our Office and claiming they missed jury duty, have an outstanding warrant, etc. Fortunately, these calls felt suspicious so they hung up and called us to see if the information was true before giving the caller any information. Scammers try to build trust, offer deals too good to be true, abuse your compassion, or threaten you with legal/financial consequences. If someone is reaching out to you with a situation like those above, get their name, organization information, reason for contacting you and end the communication. Then research the real organization online, from a phone book, or by visiting their office to follow up about the contact. Even if a caller uses a name of a known employee, it is best to follow up with the official agency to verify the contact is actually from the agency BEFORE you provide any information on the call/email/text. ⭐ Save our contact information listed below so that you can easily verify information with our team directly. ⭐ Here’s what you should know: ✅ Our office will not call you regarding federal jury duty, local jury duty, etc. ✅ We will not ask for payment over the phone. ✅ Our office and other government agencies will not ask you to pay fines or fees with gift cards, money orders, bitcoin, etc. How do I know if information is really from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office or not? ✅ It comes directly from this account, NOT a third party or a comment from another Facebook user. ✅ It comes from one of our other accounts: Lincoln County Animal Shelter or Lincoln County Oregon Emergency Management ✅ It is on our official website: www.co.lincoln.or.us/sheriff ✅ Our staff can verify the information is true.
