The form chart held up for the 117th edition of the Coos Co. Track Meet on Prefontaine Track and Kent Wigle Field at Pete Susick Stadium, Marshfield HS, Coos Bay Friday night. The Marshfield boys won their portion while the Coquille girls took theirs. While the team scores went to form, individually the wet weather hampered many times and marks except for a couple of races where seniors put their foot down, literally, to set new meet records. They were back-to-back on the track. First up was Pirate’s Bodey Lutes in the 800. He had made it known he was going to try and break Steve Prefontaine’s school record of 1:53.8. Running alone for nearly the entire race, the defending 4A state champion in the 400, sprinted home to the cheers of teammates and fans hitting the finishing line within reach of Pre’s record. However, the track’s Fully Atomatic Timing System, FAT, failed during the race. It captured the first lap, but not the second. Meet officials met to discuss the timing of the 800. Luckily, the track has back up timing with hand-held watches. Prefontaine’s record was set before FAT timing came into play. It was finally announced to the crowd what had happened and the turn to handheld watches. With that established, Lutes official times was given, 1:53.0, a new record and an explosion of applause and yells in the stadium. The next event, the 200, also saw a new meet record from Thomas Ferren, Myrtle Pt. He hit the half-lap race at 22.51, bettering the record of 22.74 set in 1965, and tops in the state in the 2A classification. In the field, Marshfield senior Quinton Kloster skyed to a new top mark in the 4A Pole Vault at 14-9. North Bend junior Ellie Massey ran to a 4A best in the girl’s 1500 (4:46.89). Bandon junior Marley Petrey set a 2A 300H best in 46.25. Her teammate, senior Makenna Vierck jumped to a 2A best in the Long Jump (16-6.75). Marshfield’s boys scored 207-pts., followed by North Bend (94), Bandon (92), Myrtle Pt. (44), Coquille (43), Powers (32). Girls: Coquille (149), Bandon (117), North Bend (9$), Marshfield (81), Myrtle Pt. (48), Powers (23). Individual boys: Marshfield junior Jaxson Stovall won two events 1500 (4:07.95) & 3000 (9:25.92). North Bend senior Miles Baxter won both the High Jump (6-2) & Long Jump (21-2.25). Bulldogs senior Landon Takenaka-Gaul also won two events for North Bend, the Triple Jump (39-4) and the 100 (11.87). Individual girls: Coquille freshman Ella Henthorne stood out big time! Not only did she win the 1500 (4:41.48), but she also took the 3000 (10:24.81) and then turned right around and anchored the next event on the track for the Lady Devils, the 4X400 Relay, which Coquille (Synthia Salazar, Matti Nelson, Ada Millet & Henthorn) won (4:33.06). Another freshman stood out in the sprints, Marshfield’s Jordyn Mickelson. She won the 100 (13.30) and the 200 (28.15) and also ran a leg on the winning 4X100 Relay team (Avery Bartholomew, Mickelson, Annhelena Vancannon, Rylee McNally) in 51.89. Coquille senior Holli Vigue swept the weights winning the Shot Put (35-6.5) & Discus (130-7). Bandon senior Makenna Vierck won three-events, the 400 (1:01.59), High Jump (4-10) & Long Jump (16-6.75). Both Marshfield and North Bend have a JV meet at Junction City, Tuesday, May 6. Coquille will hold Red Devil Senior Night Meet, Tuesday, May 6. Bandon will go to the Grants Pass Rotary Meet, May 10. Myrtle Pt. and Powers will both go to Coquille, May 6.
