Oregon Army National Guard Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry Regiment "Guardians" participated in combatives training at Rice Brothers gym in Medford during drill weekend after Staff Sgt. Brandon Ellis met veteran instructor Cody Torrez at a local barbershop. Torrez, a former Army combat medic who taught combatives at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, provided hands-on jujitsu instruction to the unit in their first combatives training in several years. The community partnership exemplifies how Oregon National Guard members leverage civilian connections to enhance training while serving part-time in the communities where they live and work.
