CBPD URGES DRIVERS TO STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES
As the school year continues, the Coos Bay Police Department (CBPD) wants to remind all drivers of their legal and moral responsibility to stop for school buses that are displaying flashing red lights. Under Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) 811.155, failure to stop for bus safety lights is a Class A traffic violation, carrying significant penalties and endangering the lives of
children.
ORS 811.155 states that a driver commits an offense if they meet or overtake a stopped school bus from either direction while it is operating red bus safety lights, and the driver does not:
• Stop before reaching the bus, and
• Remain stopped until the lights are no longer operating.
Exceptions apply only when:
• The bus is stopped on a different roadway, or
• The bus is not legally permitted to operate red safety lights under ORS 816.350 and 816.360.
CBPD is working to increase awareness and enforcement efforts. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert, slow down near school zones, and always stop when a school bus activates its red lights. Let’s work together to keep our roads safe for every child.
