In this file photo, an Astor Elementary student does crossing guard duty. The North Portland school has been piloting blended classrooms at the 4th and 5th grade level for several years. Now the model is expanding across the district.

Back in fall 2022, parent Andrea Selkregg was discombobulated to find that her daughter, an incoming fourth grader at Astor K-8 in North Portland, had been placed in a newly blended fourth-fifth grade class.
