A pair of goats have gone viral after briefly boarding a bus in Portland on Tuesday and then promptly leaving.

TriMet posted an Instagram video of the goats getting on the bus and the doors closing.

“The operator spotted them and reopened the doors,” TriMet wrote in the caption. “The goats wandered back towards the shopping center near the northeast corner of the intersection, where they disappeared from our cameras.”

The agency is taking a philosophical view of the incident: “So where did they come from? Where were they going? Did they have valid fare? Some questions may never be answered.”

The two wayward goats are a known quantity to some residents in the area, who called emergency response on them.

“There are two goats hanging out at the Burgerville outside the intersection of Division and 162nd!” a 911 caller told Portland dispatchers Wednesday. “They’re goat-ing around…I don’t want them to get hit by a car.”

The caller said she was going to try and restrain the ungulates, but the dispatcher warned her not to place herself in danger.

Another caller said she knew the goats: “They would come to my porch and eat my cat food,” she said, giving her address. “They live in a house…not the houses in front of our apartments, but the one next to it.”

The caller seemed reluctant to see the full weight of the law brought to bear on the cloven-hoofed kids who ate her cat food: “I don’t want the goats to get…you know what I mean?”

It’s unclear what potential consequences the caller was referring to.

Another caller corroborated the trespass claims, saying the goats also visited her porch. But she made no mention of stolen food.

After gentle prodding from OPB, Portland Police spokesman Mike Benner issued a statement: “We responded to the area and looked for the goats and possible owner and located neither.”
