May 10–16, 2026 was proclaimed National Prevention Week in Tualatin, recognizing the importance of prevention, education, and community support in addressing substance misuse and mental health challenges. Substance misuse and mental health conditions continue to affect communities across the United States. According to the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 61.2 million Americans aged 12 and older used illicit drugs in the past year, and nearly 6 million youths aged 12 to 20 reported consuming alcohol in the past month. In addition, about 57.8 million adults experienced a mental illness in the past year, and 29.5 million individuals were classified as having an alcohol use disorder. With commitment, education, and support, substance use and mental health issues can be prevented. National Prevention Week helps raise awareness by promoting evidence-based resources, encouraging collective action, and sharing stories of prevention and recovery. By highlighting the work of prevention partners and community organizations, we can work together to confront the challenges surrounding substance misuse and mental health. The impact of mental health and substance misuse disorders is also felt in our local community. An estimated 5,058 people in Tualatin are affected by these conditions. National Prevention Week provides an opportunity to increase awareness, recognize the signs of mental health and substance use disorders, and encourage actions that support healthier lives and stronger communities. Community members play an important role in prevention by supporting one another, helping people access resources before challenges worsen, setting positive examples, and promoting healthy choices. The combined efforts of individuals, families, organizations, and coalitions contribute to a stronger movement of prevention and care. This proclamation was introduced and adopted at the April 27, 2026 City Council Meeting. We encourage our community to join us in recognizing National Prevention Week and supporting programs and efforts that increase awareness of mental health and substance use prevention throughout the year.
