ODFW release - The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in consultation with the State of Oregon, the Pacific Fishery Management Council, the States of Washington and California, and fishery representatives met today via conference call and have taken the following in-season management action related to the ocean recreational mark-selective (fin-clipped) coho salmon season from Cape Falcon to the Oregon/California Border. ACTION TAKEN: The ocean recreational salmon season between Cape Falcon and the Oregon/California Border closes to the retention of coho salmon effective 11:59 PM Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The season remains open for Chinook salmon with a daily bag limit of two salmon (24” minimum length). RATIONALE: The Cape Falcon to the Oregon/California Border mark-selective (fin-clipped) coho fishery opened on June 6, 2026, with a quota of 47,600 fin-clipped coho salmon. As of Sunday August 9, the coho salmon catch was estimated at 37,316 or approximately 78.4% of the total quota. Forecasting the coho harvest for the remainder of the season indicates there is high likelihood that the quota will be exceeded by the scheduled end date of August 23. Fishery managers predict the fishery will reach 98% quota attainment at the end of the day on Tuesday August 18 and, therefore, agreed to close the fishery to the retention of coho at the end of the day on Tuesday August 18, 2026. While coho retention will not be allowed starting on Wednesday August 19, the fishery remains open for the retention of Chinook salmon. Following closure of the fishery a final catch accounting will be completed, and an application will be made to NMFS to roll-over any remaining coho quota on an impact-neutral basis to the September Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain non-mark-select coho (no fin-clip requirement) fishery. Anglers are reminded that following the closure to coho retention the fishery from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain remains open for all salmon except coho, with a two salmon daily bag limit through October 31, 2026. The scheduled non-mark-select (no fin-clip requirement) will open on Tuesday September 1, 2026. Anglers in the area from Humbug Mountain to the Oregon/California Border are reminded that all salmon except coho remains open through August 31, 2026, with a two salmon daily bag limit. In this area coho retention is prohibited for the rest of the year.
