The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in consultation with the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC), the States of Washington, Oregon, California, and advisory body members met today and have taken the following in-season management actions related to the recreational ocean salmon fishery in the Columbia River Sub-Area (from Leadbetter Point, Washington to Cape Falcon, Oregon):  ACTION TAKEN:  Effective 12:01 AM Thursday, August 13, that portion of the Columbia River subarea north of 46o15’ N to Leadbetter Point, and east of 124o667’ W is closed to fishing for salmon.  RATIONALE:  The Columbia River subarea recreational fishery is ahead of pace to obtain its Chinook guideline for the season. Fish tend to congregate in this nearshore area north of the mouth of the Columbia before entering the river and catch rates for Chinook are often high in the area being closed relative to other portions of the subarea.  This closure roughly represents the portion of the subarea within 3 miles of shore from Leadbetter Point to mid-mouth of the Columbia.
