Nkenge Harmon Johnson, president and CEO of Urban League of Portland, addressed attendees at the organization's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day brunch on Jan. 19, 2026. The event brought together a wide cross section of the community who used Dr. King’s legacy as a way to examine today’s civil rights debates.

The Urban League of Portland’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day brunch has long been a space for remembrance. But much of the conversation Monday focused on the present — and what responsibilities people carry now.
