Description

Amazon paid more than $100 million to Morrow County fiber-optic provider Windwave Communications from 2019 through 2022. Four local officials purchased Windwave from a local nonprofit the year before. The four had served on the nonprofit's board, and all four played a role in awarding tax breaks to Amazon that have saved the tech giant more than $435 million.

Amazon spent more than $100 million buying internet services from a small fiber-optic business in rural Oregon even as the tech giant was negotiating with some of the firm’s owners — local public officials — for tax breaks and property acquisitions to expand a growing cluster of data centers in Morrow County.
