Don VanWormer said his cat Fred woke him while his house was on fire, yowling in his ear.

It wasn’t the smell of smoke that woke Don VanWormer early Friday morning, or the sound of his home’s fire alarms. Tired from a night shift in Portland and the drive back to his house in Tillamook, he slept right through the warnings of an imminent blaze — until his cat, Fred, stepped in and did what the fire alarms couldn’t.
