A Portland man accused of stealing a backpack with thousands of dollars of electronics in it tried to cover his tracks — he or a friend wrapped a stolen laptop in tin foil — but he found police outside his door anyway because he had failed to spot an AirTag in the bag, prosecutors say.

Darren Michael Brodine, 60, is accused of first-degree theft, second-degree criminal mischief and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle for allegedly swiping roughly $2,800 worth of electronics and belongings during a car smash-and-grab on Sept. 7, court records say.
