City of North Bend release - The City of North Bend has been informed by the United States Postal Service that, out of an abundance of caution, the North Bend Post Office is temporarily closed due to a potential asbestos issue.  USPS has advised that an environmental company will conduct testing. If no asbestos is found, the closure could last about two weeks. If asbestos is identified and needs to be removed, the closure could last longer.  Here is what customers need to know right now:  Regular residential mail delivery is continuing as normal.  Post Office Box customers should go to the Coos Bay Post Office to retrieve their mail. USPS has set up a separate Dutch door process to help customers pick up mail without needing to wait in the main retail line.  Pickup location: Coos Bay Post Office, 470 Golden Ave, Coos Bay, OR 97420.  PO Box pickup hours: Monday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Please bring photo identification when picking up mail or packages.  USPS also advised that any mail dated before March 24 that requires customer pickup or a signature must remain at the North Bend facility until testing is completed and the items can be safely released. However, certified mail has been transferred to the Coos Bay Post Office.  For customers with Post Office Boxes, USPS says you may request a temporary forwarding order to your street address. That can be done online at USPS.com or in person at the Coos Bay Post Office. USPS also noted that if testing finds no issue and the North Bend office reopens quickly, mail forwarding may take longer to begin than the temporary closure itself. That decision is a matter of personal preference.  The City of North Bend will share updates as they are provided to us by the United States Postal Service.
