Happy Holidays! For each of the past seven years, a small group of private citizens have approached me and asked if the Curry County Sheriff Office could take on the responsibility of distributing some cash to families in the community who might need a boost over the holiday season. Their rationale, rightfully so, is that a private citizen wouldn’t know the community as well as the Sheriff Office. The Sheriff Office supports the community and wants the public to know that these funds do not come from our budget or general fund in any way, shape, or form. We have gladly taken on their request, gone into our community, and through last year have been able to help deliver these private funds for the benefit of nearly 50 recipients and their families. For the past seven years, the total gifted through 2023 has been $28,500 to these families. There are no tax dollars or public funding in any way, shape, or form that is part of this program that is done entirely in the spirit of the season. The only source is cash donated for this specific giving program by these private individuals who wish to remain anonymous. The funds go directly to each recipient with no strings attached. Your Curry County Sheriff Office is here to help and serve people all year long, and during the holiday season it is an honor to be able to help in this small way. With all that being said, I am asking our entire Curry County community to nominate families in Curry County that could use a little extra help with the holidays this year. Please use my email, [email protected] to submit your nomination no later than December 13th, 2024.

CURRY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SHERIFF JOHN WARD CURRY COUNTY, OREGON 94235 MOORE STREET, SUITE 311 29808 Colvin Street (Physical) GOLD BEACH, OR 97444 (541) 247-3243 09-23-2024 Press Release Located Missing Child Thursday, September 20, 2024, at about 10:09pm, I got a call from Sheriff’s dispatch reporting a missing three-year-old child. Dispatch had received a 911 call from Tim Adams, stating that some friends of his had arrived from Medford to rent a residence off Old Coast Road, Gold Beach, and while unloading their car, the non-verbal autistic three-year-old girl had wandered off and they did not know where she was. Dispatch was told that family members had been out searching the area for about ten minutes but had not located the girl. I responded from my residence and asked for additional resources from Gold Beach PD and OSP. I arrived at the residence shortly after I was called to find family members walking up and down Old Coast Road and I asked Dispatch to page out Search and Rescue. Brookings PD overheard the radio traffic and offered the use of a drone with night vision. With additional resources enroute, we started searching all the property and residences in the area. While searching around the area, more local residents joined in on the search on foot and in vehicles, expanding the search area. At about 11:18pm, I was advised that a local resident, Jim Morey heard something that sounded strange to him, just over a half mile south of the residence the little girl went missing from. Morey called one of his neighbors, Layne McLean, who was out searching by vehicle and told him the area where he heard the sound, but that he was not able to get to the location, that it was about a hundred yards away from him. I went with McLean to the area, and I started searching along the road area and could hear whimpering coming from over an embankment in heavy blackberry brush. I made my way down into the brush and located the little girl who was entangled in the blackberry brush. I was able to free the little girl and get her back to the roadway where we were given a ride back to the residence to reunite the little girl with her family. I want to thank the Brookings Police Department, Gold Beach Police Department, Port Orford Police Department, Oregon State Police, and everyone who came out to search for the little girl. Cal Ore Life Flight arrived upon request and determined besides the scratches, the little girl was ok and remained with her family.

CURRY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SHERIFF JOHN WARD CURRY COUNTY, OREGON 94235 MOORE STREET, SUITE 311 29808 Colvin Street (Physical) GOLD BEACH, OR 97444 (541) 247-3243 07-15-2024 On July 14th, 2024, at about 1:33pm, the Curry County Sheriff’s Dispatch overheard radio traffic through the Oregon State Police, regarding a drowning at the Lobster Creek gravel bar area, nine miles east of Gold Beach, Or. Dispatch sent patrol deputies and paged out Cal Ore Life Flight and the Gold Beach Fire Department. The information gathered was that a forty-one-year-old male, later identified as Adam Birdsell, from Medford, Oregon, had drowned and had been under water for about four to six minutes. Less than two minutes after Birdsell went under water, a Sheriff’s Marine Boat out of Linn County arrived on scene, on their way down river from training with other marine deputies from around the state. Without prior knowledge of a drowning and being flagged down and told about the drowning by witnesses, they began searching for Birdsell. The two marine deputies quickly located Birdsell submerged in about six feet of water. One of the deputies dove in and pulled Birdsell out of the water and onto their boat. Several other marine deputies and boats arrived to assist. The deputies started CPR immediately while they transported Birdsell to the boat ramp where Cal Ore Life Flight continued lifesaving efforts. Birdsell was transported to Curry General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff. Birdsell was on vacation with his family and friends, who witnessed the drowning. The Curry County District Attorney was notified and authorized release of Birdsell to Redwood Memorial Services out of Brookings. The Curry County Sheriff’s Office sends our condolences to the family and friends of Adam Birdsell. This was the second drowning in ten days at the same location.

CURRY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SHERIFF JOHN WARD CURRY COUNTY, OREGON 94235 MOORE STREET, SUITE 311 29808 Colvin Street (Physical) GOLD BEACH, OR 97444 (541) 247-3243 07-09-2024 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM YOUR SHERIFF I have been tormented by having to send this information out to our citizens, but it is information that must be given, and I have always been transparent and honest with our citizens. I have been with the Curry County Sheriff’s Office for almost 33 years now and your Sheriff since October 2014. It is no secret that Curry County is facing financial problems and just prior to this last budget cycle, the Commissioners gave our citizens a choice to vote for a levy to fund the Sheriff’s Office. The levy failed and during the ensuing budget cycle, the Commissioners made the choice to cut what funding we had here at the Sheriff’s Office, cutting nineteen deputy positions along with material and services. We had presented several budgets at their request and each time we were told that we had to cut more. By the time the budget was approved and adopted, we lost two positions in 911/Dispatch, two positions in Corrections and fifteen positions in Criminal/Civil/Patrol. Throughout our office we had seven open positions, those were cut along with eleven filled deputy positions, which resulted in layoffs or positions being eliminated. Because of budget and position cuts, we have also lost Patrol and Corrections Deputies to other agencies like Brookings PD, Josephine County, and Clackamas County. The bottom line is that we are still here but with the drastic cuts to our Patrol division, we will not be able to provide the service to our citizens that we have in the past. As of July 15th, which was the date given to us when these cuts take effect, we will be down to just three Patrol Deputies. Obviously, we have to make hard decisions and will only be able to respond when available to person-to-person priority calls in progress. Most all other calls will be handled through a Self-Report Form that will be available online at the Curry County website, or in our lobby. There are a lot of changes that we are forced to make, in order to provide what service we can. I did not and do not support the cuts, but we must deal with the reality of the cuts and loss of resources. As your Sheriff, I share your concerns about the increase in criminal activity as well as the current wildfire season. I also want all of you to know that our hearts are broken from the dismantling of our Patrol division and the loss of good men and women who dedicated their lives to protect and serve our citizens every day.

The Lobster Creek area is about nine miles east of Gold Beach, off of the Jerry’s Flat Road. Sheriff’s Deputies responded by vehicle and by boat to the location and Dispatch had paged Cal Ore Life Flight and Gold Beach Fire. A call was placed to Reach Air, who responded by helicopter. Sergeant Gray arrived in the marine boat and several first responders got on the boat and they started the search for the person who was being reported as drowned. The person was later identified as forty-two-year-old Rohithumar Godhani from Milipitas, Ca. Godhani was in the area recreating with his family when he entered the water for unknown reasons. The searchers in the boat located Godhani in six feet of water about a hundred yards down river from where he had gone in. Godhani had been submerged for almost an hour from the time he went under water to when he was located. CPR was started by medics and first responders on scene. Reach Air arrived and their flight medics continued lifesaving efforts, but in the end, Godhani was pronounced deceased. The Curry County District Attorney and the Curry County Medical Examiner were notified and authorized release of Godhani to Redwood Memorial out of Brookings. The Curry County Sheriff’s Office sends our condolences to the family and friends of Rohithumar Godhani.

CURRY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SHERIFF JOHN WARD CURRY COUNTY, OREGON 94235 MOORE STREET, SUITE 311 29808 Colvin Street (Physical) GOLD BEACH, OR 97444 (541) 247-3243 07-02-2024 Monday, July 1st, 2024, at about 9:54pm, the Curry County Sheriff’s Dispatch 911 center received a 911 call from Jason Gaudio, reporting that his friend, twenty-three-year-old Rayse Kawamoto, from Hawaii, was missing after walking down the trail to Natural Bridges, about twelve miles north of Brookings. Gaudio reported that there was another male subject they had met on the same trail and that he has not returned to the parking lot as well. That subject was later identified as twenty-seven-year-old Austin Dewart from Pasadena, California. Gaudio said he was worried about his friend because it was now dark and that they were unfamiliar with the area. Dispatch relayed the information to the Oregon State Police, who asked for assistance from the Curry County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team. An OSP State Trooper responded to the Natural Bridge area and contacted Gaudio. SAR members, Steve Dicicco, Will Tucker, Jesse Flovin, Tim Hawkins and Craig Rasbury arrived along with Sergeant Jared Gray and myself. The SAR team geared up and started down the trail in the dark. About midnight, the SAR team located both Kawamato and Dewart on the trail and guided them back to the parking lot where their vehicles were parked. The Curry County Sheriff’s Office reminds all those who visit the area of Natural Bridges, and other trails along the coast, of the dangers of hiking those trails. Though it was not their intention to hike after dark, they found themselves in that situation and the outcome could have been tragic.
